While not new, the Samsung Galaxy S22 gives a great experience that makes it a joy to carry in practically any situation. The tiny, powerful phone has numerous features power users and casual phone lovers will like. The device’s poor battery life and slow charging are disappointing. However, despite its lack of flash, it’s a good phone that can compete in the major leagues.

Although the Galaxy S22 isn’t Samsung’s latest and greatest, you’ll discover it easily. All major US and Canadian carriers carry the gadget. This review found Best Buy and Amazon to be well-stocked.
This phone is findable. The initial configuration with 128GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM cost $800, but most stores have cut it to $700, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it drops further.
The software and performance

After launching with One UI 4.1 based on Android 12, the Galaxy S22 now has One UI 5.1 based on Android 13. As a user of numerous affordable Android phones and iPhones, Samsung One UI 5.1 is easy to use but powerful when you go into the settings.
Samsung packed its Android phone software with so many choices that beginners may find the settings menu intimidating. You can ignore many of the bells and whistles for a simpler experience. The camera app will operate fine even if you never touch the Pro camera, and you may not care where your screenshots go as long as they’re in your camera roll. You can love or detest One UI, but it does provide something for everyone—tinkerers, tinker away!
Battery/charger

My main Galaxy S22 complaint is battery life. The phone’s 3,700mAh battery is small, but it still struggles to last all day with regular use. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s inefficiency and small battery create charging anxiety. A couple of hours of heavy gaming or 5G use really drained the battery. I got five hours of screen time one day, which isn’t enough for a premium phone.
The situation wasn’t entirely horrible. Standby power was good on days with less phone use. It depends on how you use your phone, however on a high-end phone, the battery is average. Charging makes it worse.
The max 25W wired charging is slower than competitors. The Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra offer faster charging speeds, and the S22’s slower charging speed may assist cut costs, but it feels dreadful. Luxury phones shouldn’t take more than an hour to charge from 0-100%. Oddly, Samsung seems content to let Oppo/OnePlus lead in this area. Not changing the charging speeds on the new S23, so maybe the S24 will be a breakthrough? Only hope remains.
Cameras

The Galaxy S22 uses the same camera technology. The camera system is good overall. If you’re a casual photographer or take phone photos seriously, you’ll find a lot to like.
As a point-and-shoot camera, the main 50MP f1.8 sensor usually delivers good results. You can argue about which phone’s camera produces “truer to life,” but the S22’s primary sensor is trustworthy.
Purchase it?

If inadequate battery life doesn’t bother you, get it. Other than screen-on time, the Galaxy S23 doesn’t offer much advantages over the S22. Why not buy last year’s flagship and save money when the S22 is supported for two more years? Carrier trade-ins might save you $100 or more over the S23.
Power users and phone addicts may avoid the battery life difficulties, naturally. If you want a small, powerful smartphone, most people should stick with this earlier model. In a world of super-sized phones with super-large price tags, it’s good to have a smaller option with a lot to offer, albeit with a few drawbacks.
